Each month, in order to get to know our Centex community better, we are going to highlight an Athlete of the Month. This athlete has exhibited determination, growth, and a great attitude in the gym. They challenge and encourage their teammates on a daily basis and represent CrossFit Centex with pride.

With the month of December, we would like to congratulate Shane & Victoria Witherow, our first couple athlete of the month. Since joining Centex, Shane and Victoria have truly embraced the Wolfpack community. You will always see them at any of our Centex events and they are beyond generous when it comes to fulfilling any type of need that comes up within the gym community. It’s always a good day when they are at the gym. Be sure to tell them congrats when you see them.

Tell us a little bit about you and your family:

Victoria: I am a Registered Nurse at the VA hospital, have been for 8 years now and I truly love it. I have many family that serve and have served in the military and love that nursing is just a little way I can serve those that have served. That’s a big reason I love Crossfit, is because it is military driven, and honors fallen soldiers. I have been married to Shane for 3 years, but we have been together since we were 19 years old, a total of 13 years. We have not known each other our whole lives but it feels like it.

Shane: I am a auto body collision technician, have been also for 8 years. I currently work for Caliber Academy, where I get to help train soldiers when they get out of the military, and help find them a job in auto collision. We have 1 beautiful daughter named Harper who is 2 years old, and can’t wait to grow our family.

What are your hobbies and interests?

Victoria: Crossfit mostly, crafts spending time with Harper and jeeping it!

Shane: One thing I love to do is paint cars, and I get to do that every day. I also like to bowl, go golfing, and shoot guns.

What is something we don’t know about you?

Victoria & Shane: We were very skeptical about Crossfit. Not big into doing things that a lot of people are into or fads and we have a few family members that do Crossfit and they would always post about it, so it eventually peeked our curiosity.

When did you start Crossfit? Why?

Victoria: I went to watch Shane in the Festivus Games in Oct 16′, and met LeAnn, was still kind of on the fence about it, then went to the Halloween pumpkin carving and met more people, and figured I would give it a try. Shane and I had a vacation shortly after in Seattle and my first drop in was at Foundation Crossfit. The WOD was tough, but I really enjoyed it and the weather helped. That started my love for it!

Shane: I had fallen into a depressed state when my friend passed away from leukemia, shutting myself off to the outside world. Kyle Fulwider insisted that I try Crossfit. At the time I had weighed in at 276, the highest I’ve ever been. I finally caved in told him I would, if I lost 20lbs, mainly because I did not want to be judged on how big I was at the time.

Do you remember your first WOD?

Victoria: Yes; My first official Centex WOD was the Filthy Fifty; and I thought I was going to die. I started Crossfit around Christmas time, and this was the Christmas WOD.  Hardest thing I had ever done. That is when I found my true love of hating Burpees.

Shane: I don’t remember my first WOD but I do remember my first competition, it was the Festivus Games which my partner was Kyle and we entered the “Novice” division, and took 3rd place. I had only been doing Crossfit for a month.  It was a long grueling day, doing 4 workouts and the last one being a mirror workout. We had to do synchronized knee raises (scaled), and now I can do toes to bar like a champ!

What is your favorite/least favorite thing about Crossfit? (movement, wod, etc?)

Victoria: As mentioned above my least favorite is Burpees, and my favorite is throwing around weights, really enjoy Deadlifts.

Shane: Favorite is anything that has to do with power in front of the movement. Least favorite, any movement with a squat in it.

How has Crossfit and/ or Centex affected your life?

Victoria: Crossfit has affected my life by allowing me to become stronger, fight when I feel like I am going to give up and push through. It’s shown me I’m way stronger and tougher than I thought.

Shane: Having a group of people when you walk into the door, embrace and greet you like family. They help motivate me to put the work in each and everyday. Now that my wife has joined Crossfit we have something that we talk about 24/7, it has definitely pulled us closer together.

What advice would you give a newbie?

Victoria: There are times when you don’t want to go in because you know that workout is going to be so hard, just get up and go. You will feel so good afterwards.

Shane: #1 Focus on FORM, FORM, FORM. Unless you want Steph an Adam calling you out every 2 seconds. I know the both of them are just looking out for my safety.

Tell us your most memorable moment/wod/etc. at Centex?

Victoria: Most memorable moment has just been as a whole; I love the people that I have met, friendships that we have made and love being a part of something that is so encouraging and cheers for everyone to become healthy, and strong.

Shane: The unique events that happen outside of the box. Example, our holiday party, kayaking on the Lake Travis, beer drinking, and story telling after the WOD.

Have you met any goals since starting Crossfit?

Victoria: Goals I have met have definitely been to lose weight, test my strength and overall feel better about myself.

Shane: Heck yeah! This rocking bod!

What future goals do you have?

Victoria: I really wanna work on my cardio and mobility.

Shane: All jokes aside, to make sure to maintain a healthy life and make sure that I will be able to nag both my wife and daughter for many years to come.
