Each month, in order to get to know our Centex community better, we are going to highlight an Athlete of the Month. This athlete has exhibited determination, growth, and a great attitude in the gym. They challenge and encourage their teammates on a daily basis and represent CrossFit Centex with pride.

With the start of February, we have a new athlete of the month – Serge Boldyrev. Serge is one of our athletes from the 6am class. Do not let his quiet demeanor fool you. Not only does he have a great personality, he has major secret skills as he references in one of the questions below. The 6am class is has a major void when Serge is not in class. He is another reason as to why the Wolfpack community is second to none.
(Note to the owners: We need more photos of the 6am class. Sorry Serge.)

Tell us little bit about you and your family.
I was born and raised in Kazakhstan. Then I moved to Russia with my parents. Later after college I figured that I can’t live with my parents any longer, so I moved to US.
There was a university in MS that needed diversity and it turned out I had plenty of what they were looking for, so I got in. After that I started working for a local children’s clothing company. A few years later it was time to get married, so I did. I went to the closest bar and found myself a wife. Then my company moved to Austin my wife got into residency at Scott & White and we found ourselves in Belton and we love it here.

What are your hobbies and interests?
I play a little soccer and recently I got into skiing. I like meeting new people and hearing their stories. Last time we skied I met a guy who was 90 years old and I couldn’t catch up with him on the slopes. That kind of stuff gives me prospective and inspires me.

What is something we don’t know about you?
I probably shouldn’t tell you but in my spare time I am a KGB agent. Just don’t tell anybody.

When did you start crossfit? Why?
I think I started about a year ago. There are only two guys at the office and the other one started crossfit before I did.
He kept talking about how great it was and how he was in the best shape of his life and it was going on and on… Eventually, it got my attention and I did notice that he was getting fitter. I was in between gyms at that time, so I decided to give crossfit a try.

Do you remember your first wod?
I don’t remember my first wod but I do remember that right after the first 5 minutes all my dreams about me being in somewhat decent shape faded away.

What is your favorite/least favorite thing about crossift? (movement, wod, etc.)
My favorite part about almost every wod is when you are lying on the floor all exhausted thinking that it’s finally over and you can go home now, especially on Fridays.

How has crossfit and/or Centex affected your life?
I was never a morning person but it so happened that 6:00 am class fit the best in my schedule. So, thank you for adding a few extra hours to my day!

What advice would you give a newbie?
I would say work on the technique to perfect the movements and don’t worry about the weights or speed. Just be patient and it will come to you.

Tell us your most memorable moment/wod/etc. at Centex?
The most memorable moment for me was when I managed a ring muscle up for the first time. The sense of accomplishment and satisfaction was incredible.

Have you met any goals since starting crossfit? What future goals do you have?
My goal is to have a lot more memorable moments like the one above. I haven’t had very many of those since I started, so I have a lot to look forward to.

Give a favorite quote or encouraging word.
I saw it on a sticker note at the office… It’s going to be OK at the end. If it’s not OK – it’s not the end.
